Un roller este format dintr-un tub de plastic sau metal in care este plasat un cartus de cerneala lichida. Varful rollerului este de obicei realizat din metal si este proiectat sa permita o scriere lina si precisa. In timp ce utilizatorul scrie, cerneala este eliberata treptat prin intermediul unei mingi metalice.
Rollerele de unica folosinta sunt instrumentele de scris care contin cerneala lichida si sunt concepute sa fie utilizate pana ce se consuma cerneala din ele, fara posibilitatea de inlocuire a pastei sau de schimbare a cartusului.
